Retalhuleu, Guatemala
Retalhuleu, is located on the south Pacific coast of Guatemala. The community once imported cotton and sugar but today depends on small and local businesses for revenue. Approximately 35,000 people inhabit the sprawling community.
Retalhuleu, is like all other larger communities in Guatemala: 80% of the inhabitants are impoverished while 20% are wealthy and wield control. The School of the Saints, the major project of Journeys of Hope, is located on the outskirts of Retalhuleu, where hundreds of impoverished people are settling. In this new settlement, the poorest of the poor are gathering to eek out life and living. It is in this community called "Flaminco" that The School of the Saints will usher in education, medical assistance, environmental care and much more.
